Detailed information regarding Knowledge Networks sample selection is available here: http://www.knowledgenetworks.com/ganp/docs/KN-Within-Panel-Survey-Sampling-Methodology.pdf. For additional information regarding KnowledgePanel® weighting protocol see the following: http://www.knowledgenetworks.com/ganp/docs/KN-Weighting-Synopsis.pdf

For all waves except the Young Sample Survey, wave 10 (Election Day), and wave 11 (Post Election) the following variables were used in the post-stratification weighting.

  • Gender (Male, Female)
  • Age (18-29, 30-44, 45-59, 60+)
  • Race/Hispanic ethnicity (White/Non-Hispanic, Black/Non-Hispanic, Other/Non-Hispanic, 2+ Races/Non-Hispanic, Hispanic)
  • Education (Less than High School, High School, Some college, Bachelor and beyond)
  • Census Region (Northeast, Midwest, South, West)
  • Metropolitan Area (Yes, No)
  • Internet Access (Yes, No)

For the Young Sample the following variables were used:

For the wave 10 (Election Day), the first set of weights (weight1a_w10, weight2a_w10, weight3a_w10) a vote share variable was also used in the post-stratification adjustment. The second set of weights did not use the vote variable in the weighting adjustment. The vote benchmarks used for the weights were:

Total Sample

  • Didn't vote: 38%
  • Obama: 32%
  • McCain: 29%
  • Other: 1%

Age 18-29

  • Didn't vote: 50%
  • Obama: 33%
  • McCain: 16%
  • Other: 1%

For the wave 11 survey language spoken at home from the 2006 Pew Hispanic Center Survey for Hispanic language usage was used in the weighting. Language usage adjusts to allow for the correct proportional merging of Spanish-speaking members relative to other non-Hispanic panel members.

  • Gender (Male/Female)
  • Age (18-29, 30-44, 45-59, and 60+)
  • Race/Hispanic ethnicity (White/Non-Hispanic, Black/Non-Hispanic, Other/Non-Hispanic, 2+ Races/Non-Hispanic, Hispanic)
